While cigar smokers may disagree on a great number of things, one thing they can all agree on is that before smoking a cigar, the end must first be cut. There are several tools available for this task, depending on personal preference and size or shape of the cigar.

Guillotine cigar cutters

The most common type of cigar cutters are guillotine cutters, which have either a single or double guillotine blade. The double guillotine blade is the preferred choice because it typically produces a cleaner cut. Guillotine cigar cutters are the least expensive and most practical option thanks to their simplicity and compact size.

Wedge cigar cutters

The key difference between the guillotine and the wedge cigar cutter is that the latter has a v-shaped blade that cuts a small wedge in the cap of the cigar rather than cutting the entire cap off. This type of cigar cutter is designed to cut at the same depth every time, so there is no danger of removing too much of the cigar.

Cigar scissors

Basically, cigar scissors preform the same type of cut that a guillotine cutter would, but as the name implies, the function in the same way that a pair of heavy-duty scissors would. They are more difficult to master than the other type of cigar cutters, therefore, they are most often used by a seasoned cigar aficionado with a slow hand.

Cigar punch

The cigar punch is used to put a small hole in the cap of the cigar instead of cutting it off. If the hole too small for the cigar, it can reduce the draw of smoke through the cigar. Also, tar can accumulate near the hole which will affect the flavor. Avoid using a dull cigar punch, or even worse, a makeshift object such as a pencil to punch a hole in your cigar because it can compact the tobacco, making for a difficult draw.
