There is much more to smoking a cigar than to simply light it and begin puffing away.
The first step is to select the right cigar. If you are a beginner, you’ll want to start off with a mild cigar, usually indicated by a lighter colored wrapper. Pay attention to the size of the cigar also. A cigar that is too wide may make your mouth uncomfortable, and you may not be able to handle some of the longer cigars. Before purchasing a cigar, you should check to ensure that it doesn’t contain lumps and that the wrapper isn’t cracked or discolored.
The next step is to prepare your cigar for smoking. You can do this by either cutting the cap off, or punching a hole into it with a cigar punch. When cutting, be sure to remove just enough to allow you to smoke your cigar, otherwise it will unravel while smoking. If you choose to use a cigar punch, ensure that it has a sharp cutting edge to avoid compressing the tobacco.
The final step, of course, is to light your cigar and smoke it. A seasoned smoker will continually turn their cigar while lighting it to ensure that it is evenly lit. This is important because a cigar that is not evenly lit will burn at an angle which may make the cigar too hot. You should also smoke your cigar slowly so that it does not get too hot, which would adversely affect the flavor. It may be tempting to smoke as much of your cigar as possible, but the optimal flavor is usually achieved within the first 2/3 to 3/4 of the cigar. After that, the amount of tar build up in the end of the cigar will have a negative effect on its flavor.
